Further Details

In a first for the Costa Mesa Playhouse, we are presenting two different versions of the same play alternating with each other, with two completely different casts, one all female (the traditional "Nunsense!") and one played entirely by men in drag ("Nunsense A-Men!")

Nunsense (All Female Cast)
& Nunsense A-Men (All Male Cast)

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Dan Goggin
Directed by Jason Holland
Musical Directed by Stephen Hulsey
Choreographed by Michael Wallot

When the Little Sisters of Hoboken's cook accidentally poisons 52 of the nuns with tainted vichyssoise, Mother Superior Mary Regina, a former circus performer, decides to raise funds for their burials by staging a variety show, performed by five of the remaining sisters and featuring madcap dance routines, solo star turns, an audience quiz and comic surprises.

The Nunsense concept originated as a line of greeting cards featuring a nun offering tart quips with a clerical slant. They caught on so quickly that writer Dan Goggin turned the concept into a cabaret show that ran for 38 weeks, then expanded it again into a full-length theater production which opened off-Broadway in 1985 and became the second-longest-running off-Broadway show in history, winning four Outer Critics Circle Awards including best book and music, and best off-Broadway musical. It has spawned six sequels and threespin-offs.

Nunsense A-Men, the original show with all the characters portrayed by men in drag, was originally staged in Brazil before transferring to New York City in 1998. Think of it as “Mrs. Doubtfire enters the Convent.”

"A hail of fun and frolic! Wacky and outrageous with a hysterical anything goes sense of fun!"
