Rehearsals:

Rehearsals for Batboy will begin Sunday, August 17th 2008 and will run Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7pm to 10pm.
NOT all characters will be called every night.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical
The Rehearsal Schedule for A Christmas Carol: The Musical will be released shortly. Generally they will run Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7pm to 10pm.

The Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse is a non-union theater and does not pay.


Character Breakdowns

Batboy: The Musical

  • Bat Boy: Athletic and preferably youthful. Dance and a strong vocal background is ideal. Preferably, physically agile, able to climb, hang upside side, stand on head, etc... Gymnastics background a plus and must have good comic timing. May be required to shave head, appear barely clothed (no nudity) and simulate physically intimacy with others of both sexes during the number "Children, Children."

  • Meredith: She is a conservative stay-at-home mother of a teenage daughter. A natural nurturer with a strong musical theatre, song and dance background is a plus. She must have a strong voice and good comic timing.

  • Dr. Thomas Parker: Mild mannered veterinarian, married to Meredith, well-respected in his community. He is willing to go to covert extremes to protect his family. Actor must be able to convey a much darker side and must have a strong voice. Good comic timing and being a good mover is a plus.

  • Shelley Parker: Their teenaged daughter. Into rock, hip-hop and boys! Raging hormones, mood swings, passionate attractions and repulsions. This is a strong musical theatre, song & dance part. Must have a strong voice, move well. Also, may be required to appear barely clothed (no nudity) and be willing to simulate physically intimacy with others of both sexes during the number "Children, Children."

  • Rick Taylor/Ensemble: Shelley's teenaged boyfriend. Into rock, hip-hop, spelunking with his brother and sister and his girlfriend, Shelly! He possesses raging hormones and violent impulses. Sings & dances a brief hip-hop number. A strong rock voice and good mover is a plus.

  • Ruthie Taylor/Ensemble: Rick's younger sister, able to play teen or pre-teen. A good mover is a plus.

  • Ron Taylor/Ensemble: Their brother, also able to play a teen. A good mover is a plus.

  • Mrs. Taylor/Ensemble: Their mother (may be played by a man). Protective, helpless and vengeful. This role may be combined with the role of Reverend Hightower, depending on casting. A strong voice and a character actor is a plus.

  • Sheriff Reynolds/Ensemble: Up for re-election, doesn't want to upset folks. A peace-keeper with a shotgun at the ready. May be played by a man or a woman. A strong voice and character actor is a plus. A good mover is a plus, but not required.

  • Reverend Billy Hightower/Ensemble: A charismatic evangelical preacher. Needs to be a strong gospel soloist. May be combined with the role of Mrs. Taylor. A character actor with a strong voice is required. A good mover is a plus, but not required.

  • Pan/Ensemble: A male, sexual creature with a strong and beautiful voice. A good mover is a plus.

  • Ensemble: Greek chorus, ranchers, farmers and townspeople. All must be good movers and strong voices are a plus. May be asked to appear barely clothed (no nudity) and simulate physically intimacy with others of both sexes for the number "Children, Children." All types/characters are encouraged.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical

  • Ebenezer Scrooge: Must be an excellent actor of any age who can transform themselves into Scrooge. Movement ability and a strong voice is a plus. He is a hard, cold miser who spends his days counting his profits and wishing the world would leave him alone. Because of what he sees and learns, Scrooge opens his heart to the people around him and learns charity and love and saves himself from certain doom.

  • Bob Cratchit/Ensemble: Strong Voice and movement ability is a plus. Cratchit is an accountant who works for Scrooge, and he is a kind and loving family man. The greatest sorrow in Cratchit's life is that his young son, Tiny Tim, who is very ill. Because Bob's salary is so meager, the family cannot afford treatment for Tim.

  • Jacob Marley/Ensemble: Strong voice and movement ability is required. Scary and ominous, Marley was once Scrooge's business partner, but he died seven years ago and now he returns as a ghost to warn Scrooge of the horrors that await him unless he changes his ways.

  • Ghost of Christmas Past/Ensemble: Strong voice and movement ability is required. May be played by a youthful man or woman. The Ghost of Christmas Past is the epitome youth and age as well as winter and spring.

  • Ghost of Christmas Present/Ensemble: Strong voice and movement ability is required. May be played by a man or woman with a larger than life personality. The Ghost of Christmas Present is friendly and generous and has a big production number. Tap ability is a plus, but not required.

  • Ghost of Christmas Yet to Be/Ensemble: Strong movement abi lity is required, a strong voice is a plus. A dark and ominous presence of death and doom.

  • Tiny Tim Cratchit/Youth Ensemble: Young, frail, and endearing with a strong vocal ability. Tiny Tim is Bob Cratchit's youngest son. He is a lame boy with a cheerful nature despite his ailments. Scrooge is touched by the gentleness of the little boy.

  • Fred/Ensemble: Strong movement and vocal ability is a plus. A cheerful and loving man, Fred insists that he will visit Scrooge at Christmas every year no matter whether or not Scrooge ever agrees to dine with Fred and his wife. After the visitation by the three ghosts of Christmas, Scrooge attends the Christmas dinner at Fred's home and Fred welcomes him with open arms.

  • Donation Collectors/Ensemble: Strong vocal and movement ability a plus. Cheerful men collecting donations for charity come to Scrooge expecting that such a wealthy businessman will contribute to their cause, but Scrooge refuses. After Scrooge is converted, he donates a large sum of money to one of the men and the collector are greatly surprised by Scrooge's generosity.

  • Fannie Scrooge/Youth Ensemble: Strong vocal ability required. Ebenezer's younger sister whom he loved dearly but who died in childbirth to her son Fred.

  • Fezziwig/Ensemble: Strong vocal and movement ability is a plus. Fezziwig is Young Scrooge's kind and generous employer who has a big production number.

  • Mrs. Fezziwig/Ensemble: Strong vocal and movement ability is a plus. The wife of Young Scrooges employer, Fezziwig. Kind and generous, with a very lighthearted spirit.

  • Emily/Ensemble: Strong vocal ability is required, good movement ability is a plus. Emily (or Bell in the original story) is the young woman who once loved and was loved by Scrooge. The Ghost of Christmas Past reminds Scrooge of why Emily left him.

  • Young Ebenezer at 18/Ensemble: Strong vocal and movement ability is required. Young, idealistic and in love with Emily.

  • Young Marley at 18/Ensemble: Strong vocal and movement ability is a plus. Young and greedy, he is Scooge's partner in business.

  • Other roles to be cast and Ensemble/Youth Ensemble listed below: Strong vocal and movement ability a plus, but not necessarily required for these parts.
