Character Breakdown

  • Jake – 40-60.  Lead.  Witty, neurotic successful writer (Simon’s alter-ego).  Woody Allen-ish personality but body type can range from Allen to George Clooney.  Acting and comic timing primary consideration.

  • Maggie – 30-50.  Lead.  Jake's current wife.  Matter-of-fact, career-oriented, athletic, classy.   Appears virtually as two characters; the real Maggie and the imaginary one.  Open to any race.

  • Julie – 20s-35.  Lead.  Jake’s idolized late first wife and mother of Molly, appears in Jake’s imagination both at age 21 and 35.  Vibrant personality.

  • Karen – 30-55.  Jake’s sister.  Quirky, witty, cynical.  Any body type.

  • Edith – 35-70.  Jake’s analyst.  Smart, sarcastic, takes no bull.  Any race or body type.

  • Sheila – 30-50.  Jake’s new girlfriend.  Attractive, eager to please, but overwhelmed by Jake’s neurotic intensity.  Any race.

  • Young Molly – Jake’s daughter at age 12 (but can be played from 10-15).  Precocious, loving, intelligent.  Open to children or older actresses who look younger.

  • Older Molly – Jake’s daughter at age 21.  Intelligent, eager.  Has the play’s most moving scene reuniting with her dead mother.  Actresses cast as Young and Older Molly must resemble each other; sisters would be ideal.
